とおか or とうか？

先生、こんにちは！

I'm looking at "Genki" days of the month and I see that the tenth day is spelled とおか, not とうか. If I recall correctly, with long o's, we spell it with an う (like こうこう), so is とおか an exception?

Extended お exceptions

Good eye! This is indeed an exception, of sorts. From what I understand, once upon a time there was a difference in pronunciation between おお and おう, but it has largely faded away. Nonetheless, some words are still "spelled" (kana-ed?) with the less common おお . 十日（とおか） is one of those exceptions.

Another common example is anything that uses the kanji 大 with its くんよみ, like the adjective 大きい（おおきい）,  or place/personal names like 大阪（おおさか） or 大島（おおしま）. Also, the verbs 通る（とおる）, which means "to pass through", and 覆う（おおう） which means "to cover".

Does anyone reading this know of any others?
