I just uploaded an Anki deck containing the vocabulary introduced in Lesson 3. Let me just pause to reflect on how wonderful Flickr and Creative Commons licenses are... *sigh*

Another example:
My wife is a Nihonjin. When speaking to her in English, I sometimes speak too quickly, or use too much slang. To this she usually states, "ぜんぜん わかんない” (I can not understand anything you said.).

Hi, Shutoh. This just means
Hi, Shutoh.
This just means that these words can only be used with a negative verb. For example you could say,
にくは ぜんぜん たべません。 ("I never eat meat", or "I don't eat meat at all"), or
にくは あまり たべません。 ("I don't eat meat very often", "I rarely eat meat")
For the verb ありません、 you might see something like
あまり いいひと じゃありません。(”He is not a very good person")
These words can also stand alone when a negative verb is implied, even if it isn't explicitly said. We haven't yet learned the informal negative forms of verbs, and these words standing alone will normally occur in casual speech, so it's difficult to give an example without going into a long, detailed grammar explanation. Remind me again when we get to that section, and we can revisit using these words in that kind of situation. :-)
Sensei, I am a little
Sensei,
I am a little confused on a few of the vocabulary words. The words that have the meaning+negative, such as "zen zen" which you indicate as (not) at all in the Anki Deck and the text book indicates as not at all. What I don't understand is the +negative part. What kind of negative (ja arimasen, iie)? Is the negative implied or implicit? Any clarification would be appreciated. ('.')
