Something Silly This Way Comes

drdunlap's picture

I don't know the "right" way to learn language- I only know what seems to work for me and what seems to make perfect sense. As I feel I am making reasonably speedy progress in Japanese I decided to share some things I've learned along the way in a mildly ridiculous fashion... [More...]

Self Study

Albert's picture

I have been trying to learn Japanese by myself after taking your class about a year ago.  I have purchased Remembering the Kanji and it is truly a great system. I have already fully memorized the meaning of 250+ kanji after about 2 weeks of using his book. I also bought "My Japanese Coach" for the DS which is great for vocab review and word recognition.  Now this is where my problem starts, after learning the meaning to all these kanji I've noticed that my vocab is greatly laking.  I am learning the kanji at a much greater rate than the vocab. If you use Google Chrome, you probably already know that the address bar also functions as a search bar for Google.  You can add other search engines to the search bar and access them using a keyword as well.  Here's how to add the Yamasa Online Kanji search to your Google address bar to quickly look up information about a particular kanji.

JLPT-oriented kanji/vocab review site

Tony's picture

A colleague forwarded me a link to this very interesting site, which was created by one of his students. It automatically generates randomized vocab and kanji tests for JLPT levels 3 and 4.

The program uses adaptive learning techniques (similar to Anki) so that you spend more time on the kanji that are giving you more trouble.

Interesting Blog

MegDunn's picture

I stumbled across this blog earlier, The author describes how he learned Japanese in just 18 months through some pretty intense methods (immersing himself in Japanese for 18 to 24 hours a day, yikes), but one thing he's big on is that you have to have fun while you're learning Japanese. It's an interesting read nonetheless, so I thought I'd share. :)
